Rena Kirkland, Ph.D., is a psychology professor and embodies resilience and grit. As the co-founder of 365 GRIT, Rena's journey is a testament to the transformative power of determination and passion. With a doctorate in Educational Psychology, Rena has dedicated her career to narrowing equity gaps for underrepresented students and supporting youth's mental health. Her research examines the influence of movement on mood and cognition, explores correlates of grit, and investigates the effects of high-impact practices on student retention and success. Rena also leads assessment efforts and serves as Faculty Trustee at Adams State University.
But Rena's story isn't just about academic accolades—it's about overcoming personal obstacles. She as a first-generation college student, who worked full time and struggled with an undiagnosed learning disability. At age 28, Rena was diagnosed with severe dyslexia and her struggles in school took on a new meaning. Armed with grit and resilience, she persevered, excelling in her studies and earning accolades as a dynamic keynote speaker and award-winning educator.
Rena's journey isn't confined to the classroom; it's intertwined with her passion for health and her days as a national champion baton twirler. Today, as a professor at Adams State University, Rena's commitment to her students and her research is unwavering.
